Acquire the knowledge through E-learning in the times of COVID-19

As we all are conscious of COVID-19 pandemic situation has made a worldwide impact in the past weeks and continues to hit most of the sectors, with education being one of the most affected in all over the world, this pandemic situation has forced the higher educational institutes, colleges and schools to shut down and the students to stay at home. It will face many problems in offline (Classroom) education. This pandemic can never stop us from learning effectively. As a result, more and more people are discovering the advantages of online education. These free online courses are a responsible way to develop yourself in your own time from your own home where and whenever you want.

Online Platforms for Young Learners

There are various online platforms offering online courses to students and fulfilling their various needs- from personalized classroom teaching to preparing for competitive exams which can be useful for the young learners.

Union Human Resources and Development (HRD) Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank recently said that the government is offering a slew of educational applications and platforms for both school and higher education institutes.


*      SWAYAM  (Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds)

To provide access to the better quality learning resources across the country, the project ‘Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds’ (SWAYAM) has been started. Whereas, SWAYAM provides an integrated platform and portal for online courses, using information and communication technology (ICT).

1. One-stop web and mobile based interactive e-content for all courses from High School to University level.

2. Top quality learning experience using multimedia on anytime, anywhere basis.

3. State of the art system that permits quick access, monitoring and certification.

4. coevals interaction and discussion forum to clarify doubts.

5. Hybrid model of delivery that adds to the standard of classroom teaching.

An initiative by indian government, where courses from prestigious institutes are available online. SWAYAM involves development of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) compliant e-content (video and text) and building a strong IT platform; Whereas, so as to disseminate educational content to masses, the MHRD has launched 32 Direct-To-Home (DTH) educational TV channels called “SWAYAM Prabha” broadcasting education content 24x7 basis, and therefore the content developed under SWAYAM would be used for transmission in SWAYAM Prabha (SP) DTH channels whereas, there is a requirement for synergizing the standard of contents on these platform, and for standardizing the content delivery.

*     MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses)

MOOCs are an accessible way to continue to develop in the current situation of COVID-19. a huge massive open online course (MOOC) platform that permits users to study courses offered by some prestigious global universities, sitting in their bedrooms to urge before the reminder. Courses on the platforms are often from top global universities. They are mostly free, especially if the user doesn’t need a certification, and anyone with an internet connection can join a course.

MOOCs’: (MOOCs) are such online courses which are developed as per the pedagogy stated herein and following the four quadrant approach.

1)National Coordinators (NCs)’: National Coordinators are the Institutions that have been so designated by the Ministry and assigned a specific sector for preparation of online courses for SWAYAM.

2)Parent Institute, Institute to which student registered for MOOC is enrolled.

i) ‘Sector’ shall mean a particular level or discipline of learning allotted to a NC by the MHRD.

3)Subject Matter Expert Groups (SMEGs)’shall mean a group of reputed academicians in a particular subject identified by the National Coordinator in each subject.

4)Subject’ shall mean a specific area under a discipline (Example: Physics) taught in an educational institution consisting of specific programme/ courses, resulting in the award of a certificate/ diploma/ degree.

*      CEC (Consortium for educational communication)

CEC was set up in 1993 by the UGC for addressing the needs of higher education through the use of television and information communication technology (ICT). It is an inter university centre and the nodal agency to coordinate, guide, and facilitates the production of educational content at the national level through its network media.

*      e-PG Pathshala

e-PG Pathshala is an initiative of the MHRD under its National Mission on Education through ICT (NME-ICT) being executed by the UGC. The content and its quality being the key component of education system, high quality, curriculum-based, interactive e-content in 70 subjects across all disciplines of social sciences, arts, fine arts and humanities, natural & mathematical sciences, linguistics and languages. etc. It is implemented by INFLIBNET centre with the support of university grants commission.

*    E-Pathshala

E-Pathshala has been developed by the joint efforts of ministry of human resource and development (MHRD) and NCERT for showcasing and disseminating all educational e-resources including textbooks, audio, video, periodicals and a variety of other print and non-print materials through website and mobile app. The platform addresses the dual challenge of reaching out to a diverse clientele and bridging the digital divide (geographical, socio-cultural and linguistic), offering comparable quality of e-contents and ensuring its free access at every time and every place. All the concerned stakeholders such as students, teachers, educators and parents can access e-books through multiple technology platforms i.e. mobile phones (android, ios and windows platforms), and tablets (as e-pub) and on web through laptops and desktops (as flipbooks).

*      NPTEL (National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning)

NPTEL is joint initiative by the IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, and Roorkee) and IISC for improving the standard of Technical education by providing online content which may be employed by teachers and students. Teachers can use these courses to plan the Classroom lectures. The 600 web and video courses were created altogether major branches of engineering, physical sciences at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels and management courses at the postgraduate level.

National Coordinators of India

 

In order to ensure, nine National Coordinators have been appointed. National Coordinators for each of the Sectors appointed for the purpose of development of best quality e-concentrate produced and delivery of online courses and overseeing the assessment procedures of courses offered on SWAYAM. However, the Ministry can add National Coordinators from time to time.

They are AICTE for self-paced and international courses. NPTEL for engineering, UGC for non technical post-graduation education, CEC for under-graduate education, NCERT & NIOS for school education, IGNOU for out of the school students, IIMB for management studies and NITTTR for Teacher Training programme depending on the need for expanding the Courses to be offered:
